Criterion to celebrate 100 years of Kurosawa

In celebration of the 100th birthday of our favourite film-maker Criterion is to release a 25-film box set on 8th Dec 2009. Featuring the films he made over the course of his fifty years in movies — from samurai epics to postwar noirs to Shakespeare adaptations — AK 100 is the most complete set of his works ever released, and includes four rare films that have never been available on DVD before.

Bo Ying Kurosawa Box Set: in-depth review

The, cough, long-awaited Bo Ying Kurosawa Box Set is given an in-depth review on this website. We were daft enough to spend our money on it, so you didn't have to. "It's a Chinese box set - what did you expect?!" is a good argument, though we weren't quite prepared for the calamity that confronted us... Was it really going to be 20 discs of complete and utter drivel? Or were there any saving graces?

Criterion's post-war Kurosawa box set coming January 2008

Criterion release their long- awaited and long-rumoured new Akira Kurosawa box set, Eclipse Series 7: Postwar Kurosawa, on January 15th 2008. The release will be a five-disc set and will contain new region 1 versions of: I Live In Fear, The Idiot, No Regrets for Our Youth, One Wonderful Sunday and Scandal. No word yet of running times or extras - hopefully the source materials will be good.

Spoof Kurosawa

We were sat there thinking the other day: "you know, there is a teeny bit of a pretentious edge to some of this Kurosawa material - why not make fun of it?" These spoofs are the result. These are ficticious Kurosawa movies that sound like they might be good fun if they existed, or simply loveable digs at current conventions. We hope you enjoy them in the nature they were intended. First high definition Kurosawa

Studio Canal is the first distributor to release a high definition Kurosawa film. It's a fairly obvious choice - 1985's Ran - and may hopefully be followed by more Kurosawa into high definition. Yojimbo and Sanjuro would benefit from an outing on the new format and we're sure Criterion are capable of something special on high def. Here's to hoping.
